When Coach Tim Brilley took over the head coaching job at Morton High School in Morton, IL the Potters were fresh off of an 0-9 season and had won just 8 games in the previous 4 seasons. In his first season Morton improved to 3-6 and in 2017 went 7-4 advancing to the second round of the Illinois High School Football Playoffs. The playoff win was Morton’s first since 2005. How did the staff at Morton get it done? Brilley will be the first to tell you he had a great staff and outstanding athletes but it’s clear his leadership paved the way. Brilley believes, “for us, less is more, simple is better”. He adds , “We want the five guys up front to understand what we’re doing and what we’re trying to do”. Morton High School’s Dynamic Run Game With Just 3 Schemes accomplishes that and much more. Check out the video here.

Zone, Power, and Counter
Zone, power, and counter are the three schemes that Morton runs in their high powered running attack and they use those schemes in any way possible. Coach Brilley goes over the rules for all players in each of the following schemes.
Zone Read (Backside Read)
- QB Zone Read
Power Read (Frontside Read)
- Wide Receiver Power Read
- Power Toss
- Old School Power
Counter Read (Backside Read)
- QB Counter Read
- QB Counter Toss
- Jet Sweep, Jet Read, Jet Pass
Motions are a big part of Morton’s attack and motion is used to create numbers, reduce numbers, as deception, and to hand the ball off. Some examples of motion in their running attack includes Jet, Early/Late, Fly, Flip, and Zap. Coach does an excellent job of teaching those concepts and there are plenty of diagrams and film to demonstrate how the offense operates.
This video is an excellent source for anyone wanting to have a simple, dynamic running game out of the shotgun formation and you will see why the Potters ran for 3,706 yards, 50 rushing TD’s, and an average of 336 rushing yards per game. What I enjoyed most personally was the way Brilley utilizes counter in the Morton offense and in particular their Jet Sweep that shows counter action. You won’t want to miss this!
