One of the cool things about doing these videos for the OnLine Clinic is the chance to meet some of the finest men and football coaches out there. On Saturday January 13, I had the chance to meet another one of those men, Bart Curtis, head coach at Mishawaka High School in Indiana. Coach Curtis has been coaching for 32 years, has over 200 wins as a head coach and has been inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. But you wouldn’t know it by talking to him. This veteran football coach, full of wisdom and knowledge, is as humble as they come. And it doesn’t take long to realize that Curtis knows the triple option attack inside and out. The focus of this video is what Curtis and his staff do Sunday through Friday to make the triple go. It should be noted that they run true triple option and 60% of their offense is inside and outside veer. Click here for the video.
Listen To The Sneak Peek Podcast!
There are several questions and ideas that must be discussed and it begins in the Sunday staff meeting. Some examples are: 1) How have they defended us in the past? 2) How will they align given our formation? 3) Determine the top two formations for this week. 4) Discuss and decide on the “If this…then…” scenario. This is huge for Mishawaka.
As the week goes on a scouting report is delivered and walk throughs against defensive scenarios are executed. The QB is tutored on likes and dislikes given the formation. A big part of the week is spent on preparing the QB for what he will see on Friday night. Scripted team periods with on the line calls for the QB are repped on Wednesday and Thursday. These are just samples of the weekly preparation – there is so much more!
The one concept I loved the most about this video is the thorough preparation that Curtis’s staff gives to their players. If you run triple option this is a must see video. If you don’t run triple, you’ll still benefit from how to prepare for your opponent on Friday night. Click here for the video.
