Even though I’m getting up there in years and have had plenty of time to master the keys to healthy relationships with others, I still fall short in many ways. I think, “Man, I could live two lifetimes and still not get it right.” As coaches, we need to be be able to establish good relationships with our wives, kids, employers, peers, assistant coaches, parents, and our players. Certainly with our players from the coaching perspective. So let’s zero in on that. Gone are the days when (or so it seems to me) that a coach can just be a supreme authority. The dictator that says “My way or the highway”. That’s not to say a head coach shouldn’t lay down rules and expectations and then hold his players accountable, but to do it with some…love. I was reminded lately of just five of the keys to healthy relationships. There are certainly more. Here goes…

Compassion – Have active sympathetic concern for the issues of your players, small or big. By the way, I think many coaches do a good job of this and I like the quote from General Douglas MacArthur.

Kindness – Take the initiative – have your eyes open to the needs of your players. Yeah, similar to compassion.

Humility – This doesn’t mean to put yourself down but to think of yourself less and think of others more.

Gentleness – Tame your anger and tongue. Something I’ve had to try and improve on my whole life!

Patience – Willing to endure the weaknesses of your players and caringly coach them. Something I got better at!

Well, there you have it. Those are not some some things I came up with. With the reminder from a friend, those keys are straight out of the GOOD BOOK! Colossions 3:12
