Ever see the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? There’s a line in that movie where Butch and Sundance are trying to get away from some lawmen that are on their trail. As they get halfway up a mountain and look back they realize they just can’t shake these guys. Butch looks at Sundance and worriedly says, ” Who are those guys?” Well…that’s how I feel as I watch some of these young quarterbacks in the NFL. I watch LaMar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Mac Jones, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa, and Josh Allen and I think, “WHO ARE THESE GUYS?” I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many good young QBs. And how did these guys get SO good? Remember about 10-15 years ago when the NFL scoffed at the

college game Read Option Offense in the shotgun and said it would never work in the NFL? Yeah right. Now they’re all running it in some form.
I played a lot of cornerback in high school in the 60s. In our part of the state I never worried about the pass. No one threw it much and no one threw very well or caught very well. I just came up from corner and made tackles. I didn’t worry much about the pass. When I coached in the 70s, 80, and 90s I didn’t believe you could train QBs and receivers to throw and catch well on a consistent basis. I was wrong. I see high school teams do it every year. Everyone – high school, college, and pros throw the ball better than they ever have and these young guns in the NFL are incredible. I watched the game between the Chiefs and Bills Sunday night. Greatest QB duel I’ve ever seen. Mahomes and Allen are special. They’re both big and run and throw VERY well. Josh Allen is scary. He’s 6-5 238, runs like a deer and throws lasers. The game has sure changed since I was a kid…AND, THAT’S MY TAKE!
Cool Tweet: Do you ever really know how good of a coach you are if you are always blessed with top tier talent? Coach Beaman @coach_beaman
Pro Football: The USFL is getting ready to start. I hope they just play regular football – no gimmicks.
College Football: Plenty of transfers and Georgia and Alabama will send a boatload of players to the pros.
Right now I’m reading #1 New York Times Best Seller GRANT, by Ron Chernow, Pulitzer Prize winning author. It’s full of great quotes and I like this one…“Attack their weaknesses and flank their strengths” General U.S. Grant. Civil War Generals would’ve made great football coaches, you think?
