Olentangy Liberty Football

What are the top football states in the country? Who do you think of when thinking of top states for high school football? Texas? California? Florida? Well…how about Ohio? Certainly they are in the top ten and maybe the top 5. If you ask Ohio high school coaches they would say “We’re the best.” We all take pride in our own high school football no matter what state we are from. But yes, there are a lot of great programs in Ohio and they send many players on to play in college. One such outstanding program is Olentangy Liberty High School, a school of 2,100 students on the far north side of Columbus. Head Coach Steve Hale has been the programs only coach in their near 20 year history and has established the Patriots as a top notch program. Chiefpigskin paid a visit to Liberty a couple of years ago and came away with 3 videos featuring the Patriots high powered Spread Offense attack. This week we are looking at video #1 entitled Air Raid Runs and RPOs. Coach really emphasizes their “5 guys blocking 5 guys” approach to the run game that has paid huge dividends over the years. You Spread and RPO guys will love picking up a few ideas from Coach Hale and get a little flavor from the Buckeye state high school football.

Mario Cristobal

What I’m thinking…I saw where new University of Miami football coach Mario Cristobal is retiring the Turnover Chain. You know, where a player who intercepts a pass or recovers a fumble gets to run to the sideline and put on a huge gold chain and prance around. ESPN loved it and always showed closeups of the sideline celebrations. I always wondered if the guy that intercepted a pass and was running down the sideline was thinking, “Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! I get to put on the Chain!” Maybe so, but I thought it was kinda dumb. But that’s me – Mr. Oldschool. But I liked what Cristobal said to the media. “Let’s put it this way. We’ve been working so hard and paying attention to so many other things that, in my opinion, are much more critical to winning football games and having success that [the chain] really hasn’t been a subject or a topic,” Cristobal added.  “We won’t be using it. You guys okay with that? We good now? Everybody got the chain stuff?” I couldn’t have said it better myself. By the way, I put a poll on twitter asking coaches if they thought it was a good idea or bad to retire the Turnover Chain. Overwhelming the vote was “good idea”.     DBLITY
